Elm Grove House

this alterations and additions project is located in a leafy street in Canberra’s inner north. the project comprises renovation of a beautiful existing red brick cottage, and a new linear north facing wing in the back yard. The new wing comprises new living spaces and bedrooms and has significant glazing to provide generous, light filled interiors and a clear connection to the northern gardens. A stand of mature Elms were retained to provide a grounded landscape context for the new works, and also to give shade and site heat relief in summer. An elevated construction retained tree health for large root zones. Interiors comprise simple material gestures of concrete & timber floors, plywood ceilings and black joinery. This palette allows the client’s interesting collection of art and furniture to sit comfortably and proudly within the new additions.
